mp3: Body Cheetah – Mudd Puddle

One of the most unique contributions we had to our Nutmeg State of Mind charity compilation was from CT native Body Cheetah with his track “Sylybelle”.  Body Cheetah managed to succeed at doing everything that I’ve always hoped to hear from alt-R&Ber How to Dress Well.  While Body Cheetah’s falsetto croon and r&b influenced songwriting will draw comparisons to Tom Krell’s outfit, Body Cheetah managed to be emotional without ever taking himself too seriously (something that I thought was the main flaw of How to Dress Well’s Total Loss).  ”Mudd Puddle” represents one of Body Cheetah’s best realizations of that sound with oddball synths backing up his vivid story telling.  Although experimental r&b isn’t a new development in the indie-game, Body Cheetah has already established himself as one of my favorite artists to stem from the movement.  Discovering his music was one of the best results from releasing Nutmeg State of Mind.

mp3: Chef the Chef – Fancy Clown

It’s no secret that Madvillainy is one of the most highly regarded releases in abstract and underground hip-hop and something that has left an incredible mark on the face of hip-hop today.  On that perfect album, my favorite track has always been “Fancy Clown” so I was honestly skeptical when I saw that Ghost Row spitter Chef the Chef was taking on the beat.  I’m happy that I can say that Chef handles the beat exactly how he should, with reverence for the original and a lightheartedness to let listeners know that he isn’t trying to challenge MF DOOM’s (as Viktor Vauhgn) original verse either.  Listen, donate, spread the word.

mp3: Ghost Row – Curtain Call

Despite the lack of a rich hip-hop scene coming from Connecticut, Ghost Row continue to earn the title of CT’s finest with their newest track “Curtain Call”.  Ever since their first mixtape, Chef and Color Plus have only been getting better at melding their styles and Cheap Thrillz showed off an incredibly confident Chef with the ability to create effortlessly memorable hooks.  ”Curtain Call” is another showcase for Chef as lyricist with an understated and ambient beat from Color Plus.  Chef doesn’t disappoint with plenty of witty lyricism and memorable lines: “trippy so the hippies be saying I’m far out”.  ”Curtain Call” was recorded for our Newtown tribute compilation Nutmeg State of Mind and gives the indie-rock heavy listen a much appreciated hip-hop detour.  Listen, donate, spread the word.

mp3: AceMo – Daydream… I’m Here For You…

Ever since I first started following the NY based electronic collective Makoshine, CT based producer AceMo has been a clear standout.  Whether he’s experimenting with ambient recordings or working with blog favorite Sidewalk Kal, AceMo has managed to carve out his own distinctive sound in the cluttered land of soundcloud producers.  ”Daydream… I’m Here for You…” is AceMo’s newest track and is featured on our Sandy Hook tribute compilation Nutmeg State of Mind.  As the title suggests, “Daydream… I’m Here for You…” is the kind of music that I wish could soundtrack my mid-afternoon fade during ethics or history.  There aren’t many people with the talent to combine elements of hip-hop and ambient music quite like AceMo and we’re psyched that he contributed such an amazing track.  If you haven’t already, check out Nutmeg State of Mind and donate to get some awesome music for a great cause.
