DIIV – Oshin

DIIV has had their work cut out for them since the start.  In a blogosphere crowded with dreamy indie-rock bands with many ready to put the sun-soaked music out of style, DIIV have been pretty unstoppable on their mission to not only be another band but one of the best.  With their first full-length Oshin, DIIV basically do just that with the smartest take on jangly, surf-pop since Real Estate’s Days from last year.  On Oshin, DIIV is able to utilize all their lush instrumentation and turn it into an undeniable dreamy mesh of sonic goodness.  Their soundscapes sound as big as the ocean itself with imagery that is able to surpass simply describing lazy summer nights.  I’d definitely recommend preordering this because I can only imagine how good this would sound with huge speakers.

mp3: Caged Animals – This Summer I’ll Make It Up To You

The summer is a time filled with opportunity and for Caged Animals it’s a time to make amends.  Despite an incredibly sunny sound, ‘This Summer I’ll Make It Up To You’ contains themes as bittersweet as this non-eternal season itself.  Promising to break hearts in the west coast, Caged Animals manage to pack more into the track than just happy images of beaches, sun and young love.  It makes the 2 minute track impossible to listen to only once as it gets better every time.

mp3: Rewrote – Dreuya

Yesterday a bunch of the M|O|D boys released tracks and out of all the hi-hat rolling, sample manipulating tracks I kept returning to this nearly ambient track from Rewrote.  Taking a laid back and relaxed approach to the signature M|O|D sound, Rewrote’s ‘Dreuya’ is perfect for after the party filled with more conventional trap and future-trap.  Although the crackling and lo-fi synths are at the front of the mix, it is the shuffling percussion that really makes ‘Dreuya’ such an awesome listen.
