Mixtape: Kool A.D.- 51

I honestly wasn’t anticipating on listening to Kool A.D.’s new mixtape but after an awesome single I become much more hyped for Kool A.D.’s mixtape dedicated to the bay area.  The hour-long mixtape, 51, is probably the most convincing example of Kool A.D.’s talent since Sit Down, Man and at this point I don’t think there is anyone that can argue that Das Racist are no more than a few funny lines.  On 51 Kool A.D. steps out from his usual character of referencing every possible aspect of pop culture and shows off that he can be a pretty conventional rapper.  With out mentioning Taco Bell or Pizza Hut, Kool A.D. still manages to explode with charisma and his laid back flow sounds great paired with the many Main Attrakionz features.  Stream and download the mixtape below…

mp3: Mount Eerie- Lone Bell

Like a lot of people (hipsters*) my only full exposure to the music of Phil Elverum is his music as The Microphones and really only his album The Glow pt. 2.  Although he’s stopped producing as The Microphones, Elverum is still recording as Mount Eerie and is prepping to drop a new album later this year.  ’Lone Bell’ is one of the first singles from the album and it sounds like a track that would haven’t been too out of place on The Glow pt. 2.  If anything, the production value has gone way up since that album and the earthy instrumentation only sounds better for it.  I’m especially digging the bass and piano sound in this track as everything slowing builds up as the track progresses.  ’Lone Bell’ is nothing short of a stunner and has me very excited to hear Clear Moon when it drops later this year.

mp3: Sporting Life- My Bestest Friends (Demo)

Sporting Life are back with some more “psychedelic indie ghost rock” having just dropped a bunch of singles/demos on their soundcloud.  The collection reminds me of why I was so excited by the group in the first place, with tracks ranging from repetitive noise experiments to proggy epics and lo-fi jams, Sporting Life have one of the more refreshing traditional indie rock sounds in recent memory.  My favorite track that they just dropped is the sunny ‘My Bestest Friends’ which has the group pummeling through an incredibly fuzzy and catchy track.  This track isn’t even properly finished but it’s still a fantastic listen.

mp3: Andras Fox- That’s All

For the first taste of his soon to be released Daydreaming LP, Andras Fox spins a disco-infused track entitled ‘That’s All’.  I don’t think disco will ever have a full-scale revival, however, when small elements of the genre are incorporated into new tracks like this one the genre is still alive as ever.  ’That’s All’ is just as deeply routed in beat music with vocal samples popping in and out of the mix and the track barely reaching over two minutes in length.  Stream and download the track below and listen to more Andras Fox at his soundcloud
