mp3: King Krule – Greener Delphing

Not every King Krule fan is aware of this, but he is one of those awesome David Byrne-esque musicians who can create music of many different genres extremely well.  Everyone knows that he is awesome at writing Brit-Rock/Blue Wave music, if you frequent The Up-Turn, you know that he is also a hip-hop maestro and occasional rapper, and now he has released an awesome sample of some extremely well-executed jazz he has made under the DJJDSports monicker.  “Greener Delphing” kind of takes all of those awesome, slightly jazzy chord changes you can find on The King Krule EP and extends them into a whole thought.  I can’t wait for his next full project.

The Up-Turn Presents: A Conversation with Tree

After having the chance to talk to 18 year old prodigy Oliver Nickell on his project, Tree, a lot about his music made sense.  Oliver has always made bold statements in his music with lines like “We are the universe/ don’t forget that” and “Warrior inside us/ time for you to stand up tall,” and he has been able to pull off the lyrics with a sense of genuine, wide-eyed optimism.  Those lyrics can only come from a person who’s been to incredible lows and dark places and had the ability to bounce back.  Of course, like all good stories, Oliver’s life hasn’t always been all ‘carpe diem’ and enthusiasm.  A truly amazing experience found Oliver turning his life around from a hopeless low.  Being able to chat with Oliver gave me a glimpse into his vibrant world of art, sun, and seeking beauty in everything.  Oliver’s words make it clear why he can pull off such big statements with his music.  Read the full interview below…

mp3: Royal Headache- Psychotic Episode

The newest single to drop from Australian punk-band Royal Headache is the infectious ‘Psychotic Episode’.  The track is a frenetic and fast-paced piece of garage rock that never lets the pace drop over the track’s 2-minutes.  The lyrics aren’t easy to discern but the opening statement “I am the antipsychotic” seems like a clever nod towards the Sex Pistols.  I really can’t get enough of everything I’ve heard from this group so far so I can’t wait to hear their full-length when it drops.
