Stream: XXYYXX – Even Though EP

Orlando’s 16 year old beat maestro, XXYYXX just released a new EP based around his collaborative track with Giraffage.  In my opinion the best collaborations are when two artists with two distinct styles make music that features both of their styles in a still discernible way, while still having them blend together well. “Even Though” does this perfectly.  It starts out with XXYYXX’s signature sparse 808 drums with a chopped vocal sample, and as the track progresses smoothly welcomes Giraffage’s style of swelling melodic, arpeggiating synths into the mix.  The Even Though EP features the title track along with remixes of it by a host of other great electronic producers including Teen Daze, Slow Magic, Reid, and The One AM Radio.  Link to stream and purchase the EP via Beatport below…

Video: Darq E Freaker – Blueberry (Feat. Danny Brown)

If you watched Danny Brown on Pitchfork’s “Selector” you may know of Danny’s appreciation for the UK’s gritty Grime hip-hop scene and his interest to work with Darq E Freaker.  Now, that collaboration has actually materialized, and it is as gritty and grimey as anyone could have imagined.  Darq E Freaker provides a woozily aggressive beat and Danny matches it pretty well with a couple of pretty simple verses dealing exclusively with the subject of drug abuse and a hook that gets pretty straight to the point.  Danny clearly has strong ambitions of expanding the horizons of the U.S. rap culture, and if songs like this and “Piss Test” with Juicy J and A Trak get enough attention, that goal could easily be achieved.

Mixtape: Nvthlss- EP3

I’ve been patiently awaiting the release of Nvthlss’ EP3 ever since I dug into his fantastic EP2.  Over the past few weeks Nvthlss has been dropping a steady stream of short mp3s leading up to the final release of the beat tape.  EP3 has almost three-times more tracks than EP2 and further refines the unique take on hip-hop beats that Nvthlss has already demonstrated.  Although I can definitely see some laid-back rappers sounding great on these beats, Nvthlss’ music stands on its own and is an entrancing listen as it is.  Stream the entire tape below and download it for free over at his bandcamp

mp3: Dak Jaw- TOUCHME212

Dak Jaw’s debut single ‘TOUCHME212′ sets a high bar for the Colorado-based producer.  At only just over 2 and a half minutes, ‘TOUCHME212′ is a fast-paced track that never lets down the high intensity.  The use of Azealia Banks’ ’212′ is pretty great as Dak Jaw throws in vocal clips of the female rapper across the track allowing her famous “I guess that cunt gettin’ eatin’” line send the song off.  Although it is hard to tell from just this track what kind of producer Dak Jaw will be, I’m excited to hear everything else he makes from here.

Mixtape: Mood Tattoed- Pirate Treasures

I like Pirate Treasures by Mood Tattoed because it is good.  It is good because Pirate Treasures is filled with gorgeous ambient tracks with splashes of tropically inspired music scattered throughout the listen.  Moving away from reverb-filled synth-wash ambient music, Mood Tattoed’s tracks demand the attention of the listener with memorable compositions and melodies.  The result is an album that sounds somewhere in between Boards of Canada and El Guincho.  Mood Tattoed is part of a music and art collective with another blog favorite Tortilla Pass so we’re expecting some great things to keep coming from their collaboration.  Stream and download Pirate Treasure below…

mp3: Last Days of 1984- Seasons

I’m not exactly sure what it is about Last Days of 1984 but I’m really enjoying their take on a genre I haven’t enjoyed in a while.  Last Days of 1984 make synth-pop but their jams have enough sonic experimentation to stay interesting and not overly sugary.  ’Seasons’ is the newest taste of their upcoming album Wake Up to the Waves and it’s noisy take on indie-pop is just as irresistible as the first track we heard from them.  ’Seasons’ isn’t going to reaffirm your metaphysical existence, however, it’s catchy and fun.  Nothing wrong with that.

Mixtape: Kool A.D.- 51

I honestly wasn’t anticipating on listening to Kool A.D.’s new mixtape but after an awesome single I become much more hyped for Kool A.D.’s mixtape dedicated to the bay area.  The hour-long mixtape, 51, is probably the most convincing example of Kool A.D.’s talent since Sit Down, Man and at this point I don’t think there is anyone that can argue that Das Racist are no more than a few funny lines.  On 51 Kool A.D. steps out from his usual character of referencing every possible aspect of pop culture and shows off that he can be a pretty conventional rapper.  With out mentioning Taco Bell or Pizza Hut, Kool A.D. still manages to explode with charisma and his laid back flow sounds great paired with the many Main Attrakionz features.  Stream and download the mixtape below…
