Hollow Pigeons- Letters to Kiko

15-year old wunderkind, Hollow Pigeons, has just graced us by sending along his latest EP Letters to Kiko.  The EP is a dark, atmospheric release that produces some of the best beats I’ve heard this year.  Although the songs are instrumentals, they share many similarities with the glitchy and blissed-out music of Baths.  It’s really impressive how well Hollow Pigeons has developed a strong sound at such a young age.  Stream the amazing EP below and download it at his bandcamp

Enjoy It While It’s Fresh: Oddisee

Growing up in the D.C. area, I know that Rock Creek Park is definitely something special and apparently D.C. beat maker, Oddisee, shares that same appreciation.  Even for someone who has never been to the park, Oddisee’s latest release, Rock Creek Park, is a fantastic listen that does an amazing job paying tribute to its namesake as well as showing off some serious producing talent from Oddisee.  For the album, Oddisee uses a combination of live instrumentation and samples to create ten gorgeous tracks that are just as strong as some of the stuff we’ve been digging from fellow beat makers Hanz and Michael Uzowuru.  Oddisee is set to gain some serious attention with already an impressive amount of collaborations under his belt and some incredible talent.  Stream the entire album below and check out more Oddisee at his bandcamp

mp3: Atlas Sound- Terra Incognita

Yesterday, I saw Deerhunter play their last show for a while at Lou Fest.  Their set was amazing as they highlighted their best material across Cryptograms, Microcastle and Halcyon Digest.  The reason for the end of their tour is that front man Bradford Cox is prepping to release a solo album (as Atlas Sound) this November called Parallax.  The first leak from the album is the stunning ‘Terra Incognita’, which is appropriately dreamy and captivating.  Stream and download below…

Video: O.Z. – Gates

NoNameMusicCo just released this video for a new song from Houston rapper O.Z.  Though I am no film critic, there is something about the video that seems extremely well-crafted and put together.  Though the song doesn’t start until two and a half minutes into the video, the first part of the video adds a lot to the song, creating a strong build-up and emphasizing the songs lushness.  Aside from the video, the song is great too.  O.Z. throws a slew of philosophical and introspective lyrics at the listener with strongly genuine lyrics like “This is way beyond rap / this is all I’m good at.”  O.Z. plans to drop his debut album The Genesis sometime within the next few months and from the sound of “Gates” and “Sleep” it is going to turn a lot of heads.

Danny Brown – XXX

Detroit rapper Danny Brown just turned 30 and released this mixtape to commemorate it.  Seeing as almost every up and coming rapper as of late is extremely young, Danny Brown seems like an unlikely artist to be on the brink of a breakthrough, but listening XXX makes you think otherwise.  To understand this tape and Danny Brown’s style, its important to know that Danny Brown openly has a bad addiction to adderall.  The tape is basically divided into two different sections with two completely different Danny Browns.  It starts out with the adderall-saturated, cartoonish Danny Brown as if his high begins right at the beginning of the album, but around half way through is the crash where Danny Brown suddenly turns into a depressed character who raps much more conventionally.  Though to some this might seem like a fault of the tape, to me it makes the tape seem much more cohesive and tell a story.  Brown is definitely going to receive a lot of attention for XXX but im sure his borderline obnoxious adderall character will definitely polarize opinions and have many naysayers.  You can link to download the tape below or hit the jump to listen to two songs from Danny’s different characters.

Girls- Honey Bunny

For anyone who thought Girls’ first single ‘Vomit’ was too dense and dark, this is for you.  The latest Father, Son, and Holy Ghost leak is a pure surf-rock jam that is sure to hook the same crowd that fell in love with ‘Lust For Life’.  The unforgettable chorus is something that is sure to have all hipsters cheering along with the lines “they don’t like my boney body/they don’t like my dirty hair”.  This is definitely a perfect track to close the summer, stream below…

mp3: Oberhofer- Gotta Go

After releasing their cover of Neon Indian’s ‘Should’ve Taken Acid With You’, Oberhofer became an instant buzz band earning praise from all reaches of the blogosphere.  The band are working on a debut album and the first leak ‘Gotta Go’ is a perfect way to build some hype around the project.  The song is definitely more produced and straight-forward than their earlier tracks but it maintains the raw and young sound of the tracks that most blogs fell in love with.  Stream and download below…
