Julian Casablancas – Phrazes for the Young (Review)

When I first heard that Julian Casablancas was going to release a solo album, of course I was excited, I am always up to hear anything written by a member of the strokes.  Yet as each leak from the album surfaced, I found my self extremely unsure about the release.  There were tracks like 11th Dimension, which were fairly good, but then there were also tracks like River of Brake Lights which had me completely loosing faith in the project.  Then November 3rd came and I got the album.  As I listened to each track, it felt like he was trying to experiment with a different rock genre on each song, and electronify each one.  The one song that really stood out to me was “Out of the Blue”.  It was the closest to a song that could have been on “Room on Fire” or “Is This It” that I had heard from any member of The Strokes since “First Impressions of Earth”.  Overall, this album seemed like Casablancas’ writing seemed inbalanced without the other members of the strokes backing him up, so my final judgement is a

Indie Superstars “Do they Know its Christmas?”

In 1984 Geldof and Ure got together an allstar group of British Pop-stars and recorded the legendary christmas song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”  In 2004 Geldof gathered the likes of Thom Yorke and Chris Marten to record another version of the song.  Hopefully this year a truly great version will be released.  This time organized by members of F*cked Up.  In a recent interview the lead singer confirmed that they have already confirmed guest spots from Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio, GZA, Broken Social Scene, No Age, Bob Mould and Yo La Tengo.  They are also waiting to hear back from Feist, Jarvis Cocker and M.I.A.   They have compiled a great list of Indie artists and I can’t wait to hear what it sounds like!
